Canada Soccer’s Futsal National Team has named a 17-man roster for its two-match international friendly series with defending back-to-back Concacaf Futsal Championship winners Costa Rica. The team will play 31 January and 1 February in San Rafael, CRC as part of their preparations for the 2020 Concacaf Futsal Championship scheduled for 1-10 May in Guatemala.

Canada last faced Costa Rica in a January 2018 two-match series in San Jose, CRC. Canada fell 4:5 in the opening match and 0:5 in the second match. The program also faced Costa Rica in an opening match thriller at the 2016 Concacaf Futsal Championship falling 2:3 despite two goals from eventual tournament Golden Boot winner Freddy Moojen.

“This series comes at the perfect time for this group who have been together three times in the past number of months in preparation for the 2020 Concacaf Futsal Championship,” said Head Coach Kyt Selaidopoulos. “There are some tough roster decisions to be made ahead of Guatemala and this two-match series gives us an opportunity to evaluate each position against the toughest of confederation opponents in Costa Rica.”

Returning players from 2016 include Moojen, Renaud, Ian Bennett, Nazim Belguendouz, Daniel Chamale, 2018 Futsal National Team Player of the Year Jacob Orellana, Eduardo Jauregui, and Marco Rodriguez.
