Long Term Player Development

Soccer For All. Soccer For Life.

LTPD Is about putting the player first and offering age-appropriate opportunities for kids to enjoy the game of soccer. Making the game fun is key in teaching and coaching, so that players will continue in the game and may even coach or referee as they get older.

Please use the resources the Technical Department has assembled for parents and coaches for Grassroots (U4-U12), Soccer for Life (13+) and Talented Pathway (13+) players.

What is LTPD?

Definition:

Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) is a player-centered approach to soccer development. Instead of treating young players like “adults,” it tailors training, competition, and expectations to their physical, mental, and emotional stage of development.

Key Goals of LTPD:

  • Create fun, safe, and inclusive environments.
  • Prioritize skill development over early results.
  • Support long-term athlete health and retention.
  • Ensure pathways for all players - recreational, competitive, and high-performance.

Why LTPD Matters:

For Players:
  • More touches on the ball = better opportunity for skill development.
  • Reduced risk of burnout and injuries.
  • Confidence grows through achievable challenges.
For Parents:
  • Clear expectations of what soccer should look like at every stage.
  • Assurance that the focus is on safe, healthy development.
For Coaches & Clubs:
  • Evidence-based framework to guide training and competition.
  • Support for building environments that align with best practices.
