This year’s Brian Avey Award was bestowed upon Mike Giona.
Nominated by his peers of the Ontario Soccer Staff, this award is presented to the staff member that best exemplifies the principles and values of Ontario Soccer and takes pride in their contributions to soccer while exhibiting respect for the organization, its volunteers and participants.
Giona has been with the Ontario Soccer Centre (OSC) since 2012, beginning as Operations Manager.
He became the General Manager of the Ontario Soccer Centre, one of the province’s largest indoor soccer facilities, in 2016.
Under Giona’s leadership, OSC has undergone a number of energy efficient upgrades and brought in FIFA Level 2 field turf to make it one of the most sought after playing facilities in Ontario.
Additionally, OSC has completed significant renovations and enhancements, with the safety of the participant in mind.
During the pandemic, he went over and above his responsibilities to ensure the facility remained operational. At one point, even sleeping at the building for a week’s time, to provide the necessary staffing coverage.
With this kind of dedication to the organization and his always friendly, outgoing demeanour, it is easy to understand why he is this year’s Bryan Avey Award recipient.
