Play. Inspire. Unite.

Following a recent CBC report, which detailed deplorable crimes of abuse against minors in different sports,  Ontario Soccer is taking the opportunity to remind the Districts, Leagues, Clubs and Academies of the available programs offered which can assist in creating a safe and positive environment.

Under a partnership with Sheldon Kennedy and the Respect in Sport Group (RIS), the “Activity Leader Program” details methods to use for supporting athletes.  This mandatory program is being phased-in over five years and provides a certification that is valid for five years. The course is also transferable and recognized across other sports. Certification and training will be conducted by a two-hour online course and the course fee is $30.

For more information on RIS’s Activity Leader certification program, please click here or click here for course access.

Additionally, Canada Soccer and Ontario Soccer recently established a partnership with Sterling Talent Solutions, a well-known Human Resources Screening Services Company, referred to in the sport industry as “Sterling Backcheck.”  Sterling Backcheck provides volunteer and staff screening services for Canada Soccer and Ontario Soccer operations.

Ontario Soccer recently shared Sterling Backcheck’s information with the membership for consideration when screening volunteers, coaches and administrators.  There is a $25 fee per background check, and most searches can be completed within 36 hours.

Finally, please refer to the Ontario Soccer Policies (13.0 Code of Conduct and Ethics), for more information on ensuring a safe and positive environment within Ontario Soccer.
