Regular season leaders, FC London and Sigma FC, taken down at home in Round 1 of the 2018 playoffs

Play. Inspire. Unite.

It was a truly remarkable beginning to the League1 Ontario 2018 Men's Championship playoffs group stage, with the top seeds in both Group A and B being beaten at home.

In Group A, FC London were defeated by a determined Alliance United FC side, who scored early and held out resolutely to leave the regular season champions needing two straight wins in their upcoming group stage contests. Elsewhere in Group A, Vaughan Azzurri had a resounding win over Darby FC. Vaughan and Alliance will square off in Round 2, in a match that could decide a Championship finalist.

In Group B, top seed Sigma FC were also surprised on home turf. Woodbridge Strikers went to Mississauga and put their lightning quick counter-attack game into effect, upsetting the hosts and renewing a rivalry that created Sigma's only regular season loss in 2018. Elsewhere in the group, defending League1 Ontario champions, Oakville Blue Devils, soundly defeated the visiting Unionville Milliken SC side. Oakville and Woodbridge will also square off in Round 2, potentially putting the Group B crown on the line as well.
