The Burlington Bayhawks took on the Markham Lightning in the U-21 Women’s Ontario Cup Final, Sunday at the Ontario Soccer Centre.

Burlington advanced to the final by defeating the St. Catharines Jets 5-0 on Saturday, while Markham downed the Oshawa Kicks 7-1 to advance.

Markham would open the scoring in just the fifth minute when Brianne Desa pounced on a loose ball in the box and her shot snuck by the keeper to make it 1-0.

Burlington would answer right back, just five minutes later.

Darcy Mickalow would whip her cross into the far post and Mairin Boyle would get her head on to it to tie it at 1-1.

Five minutes after that, Miranda Badovinac would put Burlington ahead when she controlled a Markham clearance and would chip the keeper from nearly 40 yards out to make it 2-1.

Burlington would increase their lead just before the half when Jaia Riggen broke free and had a shot on goal. Markham’s Emma Chisholm would make the first save but Haley Kostyshyn would hop on the rebound and make it 3-1.

After a blistering first half the second half settled down considerably as Burlington seemed content to keep possession and keep things tidy defensively.

Markham continued to press as the game went on but couldn’t find a way through.

Burlington would shut it down from there and it would finish 3-1, crowning them the U-21 Womens Ontario Cup champions.
