This week's session focuses on Learn to Train

Play. Inspire. Unite.

The Player Development department continues to put together a practice for coaches to use with their players across the province.

Each week will focus on one of the three LTPD development stages at the Grassroots level, which includes Active Start, FUNdamentals, and Learn to Train.

This session is designed to give players realistic scenarios to challenge and improve their 1v1 attacking skills. The physical literacy focuses on the ability to move quick and off the shoulder of the defenders while working on hand to eye co-oridnation and communication skills.

The small sided game focuses on two outfield players trying to receive and create space to score past the goalkeeper. The 1v1 activity encourages not only a rotation of players doing different roles but also the starting points of the defender and server. Rotating the players starting positions allows players and coaches to recreate scenarios where the ball travel from different areas like in a game, rather than the traditional 1v1 face off approach. This then forces the player to make decisions relative to the defenders position. “Do I receive and shoot if the defender gives me space?” or “the defender is approaching, I have to take them on and score”

Players then experience a larger small sided game to give them the opportunity to apply these skills in a larger space.
