The Ontario Soccer Centre has completed one major project and is now putting the final touches on the first phase of another - making it once again one of the leading soccer facilities in the province and the country.

Two weeks ago, the Soccer Centre completed the installation of its new indoor turf. The AstroTurf GT is FIFA recommended 2-star quality and is a major improvement over its former aging turf.

"FIFA 1-Star recommended is for fields that meet the standard for community and amateur fields," David Boccia, Director of Facilities and General Manager of the Soccer Centre said. "FIFA awards 2-star designations to fields that ensure the ihghest playing performance for professional level-football."

"Being a high-use facility, the old turf was showing visible signs of wear and degradation."

There still was some life left in the old turf however as half of the old turf was sold to a small-sided facility north of Toronto with the remaining being donated to several groups including the Pan American Organizing Committee for a fan area in Hamilton.

Wednesday will also mark the opening of the Soccer Centre's second major project.

A complete overhaul of its outdoor stadium is nearing its Phase 1 completion. In addition to FIFA 2-star quality turf, the grounds have been re-designed to include a 2,000 seat stand and will make room for further expansion as MLSE and the Ontario Soccer Associatoin look to grow the ground in Phase 2.

Toronto FC II will play their home opener, kicking off at 8 p.m. on the new Soccer Centre ground. Tickets are $12. Children under two are free.

In addition to the game, Toronto FC star Sebastien Giovinco will be in attendance from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. signing autographs for ticket holders.
