This Week In League1 Ontario: NCAA Signing Frenzy

It has been a frenzy of NCAA and CIS signings as an incredible 28 League1 Ontario 2015 alumni made 2016 commitments to NCAA and CIS programs.

Two clubs are leading the way, with Vaughan men's team sending ten players state-side and a spotlight on Woodbridge's women's scholarship program taking centre-stage this past week.

In addition, This Week in League1 readers will get an exclusive glimpse at the Kingston Clippers women's team, in the second of a series of profiles on the 2016 new additions to the league, which will offer Pro-Am opportunities for eastern Ontario women's players in the season ahead.  

Finally, an exciting coaches education event is in store for Friday February 26, with Canada Soccer High-Performance director Tony Fonseca putting on a day-long clinic for League1 and OPDL coaches.

To begin, Vaughan Azzurri 2015 men's team put a bumper crop of youthful talent on the pitch last season, utilizing their depth to win the OSL U21 Provincial Elite division, and take second in the Provincial Elite division, as well as giving opportunities to their best performers in League1. The quality of their prospects certainly attracted attention from college scouts, and this past week the club announced that a group of ten players have committed to NCAA DI schools for fall 2016.

League1 Ontario had the pleasure of hosting both Canada U20 head coach Rob Gale and CWNT head coach John Herdman in 2015 for the first two in a series of joint initiatives with Canada Soccer, staging ID camps for players, and education clinics for coaches. The third in the series was announced for Friday February 26, with Canada Soccer High Performance director Tony Fonseca coming to Pickering Soccer Centre to speak on the level of training required from players involved in international competition.

In a special spotlight on the Woodbridge women's "Class of 2016" - which has graduated a record 22 players overall (18 of which played League1 2015) to top NCAA and CIS programs - an event was held at the Primavera Banquet Hall in Woodbridge. The team has had a special three years of development in the club's women's scholarship program run by League1 Ontario head coach, Joe Parolini, playing friendlies with eight NCAA DI schools, as well as the Ghana U17 women's team and Nigeria women's national team, en route to scholarship offers for fall 2016.

Finally, in our second installment of profiles on new teams for 2016, Kingston Clippers will offer the highest level of women's soccer east of Toronto this summer as they enter the League1 Ontario women's division. The club will immediately benefit from a talented generation of homegrown players, robust community support, and strong ties with the region's post-secondary soccer programs.
