Canada are back on the podium after a historic run at the Rio 2016 Women's Olympic Football Tournament. Canada won five of six matches to claim their second consecutive bronze medal, culminating their run with a 2-1 victory over host Brazil at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo.

On the final day, it was again Canada's blend of youth and experience that made the difference.

Seventeen-year old Deanne Rose, who hails from Alliston, Ont, opened the scoring and captain Christine Sinclair scored the eventual winner, with one goal on either side of the break. Incidentally, both Sinclair and Rose also hit the woodwork in the victory.  

Jessie Fleming from London, Ont., and Ashley Lawrence, Brampton, were the standout performances for the women's side. Fleming's good work led directly to Sinclair's goal and she was a force all over the park. Lawrence was a beast on defence for Canada, shutting down Brazil's star player, Marta, for much of the game. 

From five wins, Canada beat three confederation champions: the Asian champions Australia, the European champions Germany, and the South American champions Brazil. The August 19 victory against Brazil gave Canada 15 wins on the 2016 calendar year, a new record for Canada Soccer's Women's National Team after 40 years of international soccer.

For Team Canada, Canada Soccer's Women's National Team are the first women's team sport to win back-to-back Summer Olympic medals. From more than 100 years of Summer Olympic Games, only Team Canada men's lacrosse previously won back-to-back medals back in 1904 and 1908. Canada Soccer won Olympic bronze at London 2012 and Rio 2016.
