Quest for Gold’s overarching goal is to increase the performance and number of Ontario athletes competing at the highest national and international levels, thereby contributing to the improved performance of Canada at international competitions. The program supports Ontario's amateur athletes through direct financial assistance, enhanced coaching, and enhanced training and competitive opportunities.

Launched in January 2006, the Quest for Gold program has realized a 68% increase in the quantity of athletes earning Canada Cards, meaning more athletes are representing Ontario on Canada’s national teams. Such was the case at the 2016 Rio Olympics and Paralympics, where 45% of Team Canada athletes were Ontario residents, while 30% of the Paralympic team were from Ontario.

Ontario’s Sport Plan, Game ON, pledged to “modernize the Quest for Gold athlete support program”. In support of this, the branch recently launched a survey of QFG- funded athletes, as well as a second survey to PSO/MSOs who administer QFG. Data collected from this survey will help the Ministry better understand the needs of both athletes and PSO/MSOs as well as the supports required for athletes to reach their high performance goals.
