VAUGHAN, February 9, 2014, The 2014 Ontario Indoor Cup drew to a conclusion this past weekend, February 8-9, 2014 at The Soccer Centre in Vaughan. This weekend produced 3 new Provincial Indoor Champions, bringing the total to 7 for 2014, with one division still to be determined. These most recent Titles were handed out to the best Under 13 Girls, Under 18 Boys and Under 18 Girls teams in the province.

In the first Final of the day Gloucester Impact 2001 clashed with FC Milton Vardar  in the Under 13 Girls Division. Gloucester seemed to be a step ahead from the opening whistle as they created a handful of scoring chances in the early minutes, but the Milton goalkeeper made some excellent saves. The possession evened out as the first half progressed, with the score locked 0-0 at halftime. The second half saw much of the same with Gloucester creating chances but unable to convert. Just when it was looking like Kicks from the Penalty Mark, Gloucester's 
Julia Barlas broke the stalemate to give her squad the win. Congratulations to the Gloucester Impact 2001, the Under 13 Girls Ontario Indoor Cup Champions!

In the Under 13 Boys Semi-Final, the Brampton East Exterminators matched up with Epic FC Toronto. Epic FC Toronto took an early lead with two vicious low corner goals by Ronaldo Marshall in the first ten minutes of play. Both teams exchanged great chances throughout the rest of the half however Brampton East was unable to get on the board. The second half was much of the same starting with a beautiful goal by Ronaldo Marshall as he brought the Brampton East goalie out of the net, walked the goal line and scored. Carson Larabie sealed the game with a hard low corner shot with 18 minutes left on the clock and Epic FC Toronto held on to defeat the Brampton East Exterminators 4-0.

In the other Under 13 Boys Semi-Final, the Brampton Blast 01 took on Thornhill Azzurri 2001. Oluwafemi Akintomide started off the game with a hard kick in the first two minutes which resulted in a goal and an early lead for Brampton Blast. Thornhill came close to scoring but it was unable to break the Brampton Blast goalkeeper. Joseph Caridi scored a stunning goal off of a corner kick with 11 minutes left in the half for Brampton and took a two goal lead into halftime. Brampton extended their lead in the second half with two goals from Promise Akinpelu – a blistering kick as well as a precise header. Brampton Blast was able to keep their lead and shut out Thornhill Azzurri 2001 keeping them off the scoreboard with a final score of 4-0.

Due to a protest, the Under 13 Boys Final will be replayed at a date to be determined.

In the first Under 18 Girls Semi-Final, North London Galaxy faced off against Vaughan Azzurri. The first goal in the game came late in the first half and was scored by Vaughan’s Arthi Raviandran. North London looked as though it was going to even the score in the second half with a shot on net in the first 30 seconds, however, the Vaughan keeper made the stop. Vaughan added the insurance goal on a penalty kick by Taylor Tsotsos. A final score of 2-0 would send Vaughan Azzurri to the Final.

In the second Semi-Final of the Under-18 Girls, the London NorWest Wildcats faced the Etobicoke Energy. London NorWest made an early impression, when after seven minutes of play, #23 Alyssa Blair easily tapped a pass into the Etobicoke net. Etobicoke held the score to one for the remainder of the first half, pushing for their equalizer, but London NorWest had another idea. Eight minutes into the second half, London Norwest #44 Julia Benati took a hard kick resulting in a goal, making the score 2-0, and then not three minutes later, scored her second goal of the game. London NorWest solidified their win with one minute left on the clock as #10 Shaina Nelson sent a hard kick into the back of the net. London NorWest keeper #31 Courtney James kept a clean scoresheet, the final score 4 vs 0 London Nor’West over Etobicoke.

In the third Final of the day London NorWest took on Vaughan Azzurri 97A in the Under 18 Girls Division. London started out controlling the play and looked to be the better team in the early minutes. As the first half progressed Vaughan would tighten up defensively and was rewarded for its efforts Anisa Boland converted a two-on-one counterattack to give Vaughan a 1-0 lead. Vaughan would double their lead just before halftime as Elizabeth Cowan would beat the London goalkeeper. In the second half Vaughan really put the pedal down, creating several chances. London held Vaughan at bay as long as it could, but Vaughan would eventually put the game out of reach with two more goals one by Rebecca Neish and the other by Cowan, her second of the game. Congratulations to the Vaughan Azzurri 97A, the Under 18 Girls Ontario Indoor Cup Champions!

In the Under 18 Boys Semi-Final, Ottawa South United Force Black faced Brampton East Devils. This fast paced game saw equal scoring opportunities for both teams up until Ottawa took the lead with a penalty kick from Nicholas Medeiros who blasted it into the top corner of the net with just under three minutes left in the half. Mitchell Kurylowicz followed that with a goal less than a minute later to give Ottawa a two goal lead going into the half. Ottawa continued their domination of the Brampton East Devils in the second half with a tap-in goal from Brian Rosenthal as well a beautiful tic-tac-toe shot from Brett Malovic. Ottawa was able to keep the shutout and win the game 4-0 against the Brampton East.

In the Under 18 Boys Ontario Indoor Cup Semi-Final, the Burlington Bayhawks squared off against the Thunder Bay Chill. This match had back and forth action all game. Both teams had great scoring chances throughout in the first half but neither team was able to solve the other. The first half ended in a 0-0 tie. The second half was much of the same until Jace Kotsopoulos of the Burlington Bayhawks gave the match an exciting finish with his low corner goal with only two minutes left in the game. This impressive goal ended up being the game winner allowing the Burlington Bayhawks to defeat the Thunder Bay Chill by a score of 1-0.

The last Final of the day featured the Under 18 Boys Division with the Burlington Bayhawks facing off against the Ottawa South United Force Black. These teams matched up well against one another, as both teams were highly skillful and played a physical style of play. Chances were exchanged at both ends but neither side were able to convert, going into halftime locked at 0-0. Burlington would pick up the pace in the second half and find the back of the net in the early minutes on a blistering shot from Jace Kotsopoulos. Ottawa South United fought hard to equalize but was unable to beat the Bayhawks goalkeeper. Congratulations to the Burlington Bayhawks, the Under 18 Boys Ontario Indoor Cup Champions!
