The lone Canadian at the FIFA World Cup Brazil has his first start of the competition.

Joe Fletcher, the referee who hails from St. Catherines, Ontario, was informed last night that he had been assigned to call Match #5 – the opening game of Group C between Colombia and Greece.

Fletcher has been appointed as Assistant Referee 2. He will be paired with Head Referee – Mark Geiger from the USA, Assistant Referee 1 – Mark Sean Hurd from the USA and Fourth Official – Alireza Faghani from Iran.

The rest of Fletcher’s games have not yet been announced by FIFA. Referees are only told a few days ahead of the games in an attempt to protect the integrity of the competition.

Fletcher was featured on CBC’s The National before he departed. He spoke about what it’s like to call a game on the big stage and what drove him to become the successful referee he is today.
