In the opening match of the Gary Miller Charity Shield weekend, the U17 Boys delivered a thrilling start to the day at the Zanchin Automotive Soccer Centre. Woodbridge SC and Vaughan SC battled fiercely on Saturday, October 25, 2025, with the match ultimately ending 4-2 in penalty kicks in favour of Vaughan.
The game began at a blistering pace, with both sides showing composure and physicality right from the opening whistle. Vaughan looked to strike early when Ramos Pedrosa nearly broke the deadlock, firing a shot off the woodwork just moments after being denied a penalty call by the referee in the opening three minutes.
The intensity continued, with Woodbridge shown three yellow cards within the first 30 minutes of play. Their persistence paid off when a free kick delivered to the near post was headed on by #4 Frasca to teammate #19 Gianluca Vecchiarelli, who made no mistake with the finish to put Woodbridge ahead.
In the 38th minute, Vecchiarelli nearly doubled the lead, connecting on another free kick but sending his header just wide. Moments later, Vaughan came close to equalizing before halftime, but an incredible save from the Woodbridge goalkeeper preserved the 1–0 lead heading into the break.
The second half began much like the first, with both teams continuing to press aggressively as tensions grew with each passing minute. Woodbridge’s #6 Nicholson fired a free shot over the bar, narrowly missing the chance to double his team’s lead. Just one minute later in the 53’d minute, Vaughan’s continued pressure paid off as #8 Jacob Gravina found space at the back post to slot home an easy tap-in, bringing the game level.
In the 65th minute, a brilliant ball from Woodbridge defender found the foot of #7 Leandro Stalteri, who gave his team the advantage with a fantastic volley that beat the Vaughan goalkeeper Giuliani. Just minutes later, Stalteri struck again — unleashing a powerful shot that left Giuliani frozen, doubling Woodbridge’s lead.
Vaughan didn't back down and were rewarded a penalty that Ramos Pedroza slotted in and cut the lead down to one with under 10 minutes remaining. The drama continued- with seconds remaining in the match, Vaughn were rewarded a penalty after a straight red card was shown to #3 Luca Madden and Vaughan was able to slot it in and send the game into penalties.
In a drama packed penalty shootout, Vaughan's keeper Vincenzo Giuliani became their hero saving two big penalties as Vaughan were able to edge out Woodbridge 4-2.
