In a tightly contested battle at the Zanchin Automotive Soccer Centre in Vaughan, BVB International Academy Waterloo edged out Markham Soccer Club in a dramatic penalty shootout to win the Girls U17 OPDL Cup Final. The match, which kicked off at 5:15 p.m., was a showcase of grit, skill, and resilience from both sides.

From the opening whistle, the game was evenly matched, with both teams trading chances and maintaining a high tempo. Markham nearly struck early in the 2nd minute when standout Naomi Benjamin rose above the defense to meet a corner kick, but her header drifted just wide.

Markham continued to press and had another golden opportunity in the 28th minute. BVB goalkeeper Brooke McMurren misplayed the ball far outside her box, allowing Jasmine McCatty to pounce on the loose ball. Her long-range effort, however, failed to find the back of the net.

BVB responded with chances of their own. Eva Argueta broke through the defense but took a heavy touch that allowed the keeper to recover. In the 34th minute, a long free kick found Lauren Klingspon unmarked at the back post, but she couldn’t control the ball. Just minutes later, Amaris Macmhmueller was sent in on goal with a lofted pass over the top, but her shot veered wide.

Markham had the final chance of the half when a loose ball fell to Jasmyn Clarke, whose shot sailed over the bar.

The second half mirrored the first, with both teams exchanging chances and battling for control. A lengthy injury delay disrupted the rhythm late in the match, and despite both sides pushing for a winner, the game ended in a draw after regulation time.

In the penalty shootout, BVB was flawless, converting all four of their attempts. Markham, meanwhile, missed two crucial shots, allowing BVB International Academy Waterloo to lift the Girls U17 OPDL Cup in dramatic fashion.
