On Sunday, July 20 at the Zanchin Automotive Soccer Centre Stadium, the U21 Girls Final of the 2025 MilkUP Ontario Cup delivered a tense and tightly contested battle between Guelph Gryphons FC and North York FC Emery Blizzards. After 90 minutes of scoreless action, it was Guelph who held their nerve in penalties, winning 6–5 in a dramatic shootout to claim the title.
The match started with immediate intensity, as Selenda Poveda of North York Emery fired off a shot in the opening minute that flew just over the crossbar. Guelph responded with a long-range effort from Adrienne Fraser in the 21st minute, but it was calmly caught by North York goalkeeper Alegra Black.
The first half remained evenly matched, with both teams showing strong defensive structure and composure, resulting in a 0–0 scoreline at halftime.
The second half brought more action and chances. Poveda continued to lead North York’s attack, forcing a big save from Guelph keeper Mackenzie Monteiro in the 51st minute, with defenders rushing in to help clear the rebound. Monteiro came up big multiple times, confidently coming off her line to smother dangerous plays.
Poveda threatened again in the 61st minute, chasing down a long ball from midfield, but her shot went wide. Guelph’s best chances came from Miranda DiSalvo in the 64th minute, who hit the side netting, and Laura Gemin in the 72nd, whose strike from distance was handled comfortably by Black. Guelph nearly broke through in the 84th minute, but Halle Pulley’s shot was again denied by the steady hands of Alegra Black.
With neither side able to find a breakthrough, the final went to penalties — and it was a nail-biter. Both teams exchanged composed finishes before Guelph finally edged ahead, winning the shootout 6–5 and securing the U21 Girls Ontario Cup championship.
