Play. Inspire. Unite .

Ontario Soccer proudly acknowledges Alexis Vaughan and Nick Vagenas who were appointed and officiated the 2025 Futsal's Canadian Championship, which was held this year in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Alexis and Nick represented Ontario with excellence at the event. Alexis was appointed as the Referee for the men's final, a testament to her consistent performances and leadership. Nick contributed significantly to the officiating team with a dynamic performance as the fourth official in the final. The appointments highlight Ontario Soccer's unwavering commitment to elevating futsal’s profile and providing platforms for athletes and Match Officials to excel across the country.

Futsal is a dynamic indoor variant of soccer, played on a smaller court with five players per side. The game follows its own set of rules, distinct from traditional football. Matches consist of two 20-minute halves, with the clock stopping during interruptions, ensuring a fast-paced and engaging experience for players and spectators.

National and Provincial development

Canada Soccer's collaboration with FIFA instructors Shane Butler and Krystin Pahia, helped pave a path for the development and recognition of our Match Officials. Alexis's and Nick's performance in the Futsal Canadian Championships enhances the credibility and stature of the competition.

Provincial role

Provinces play a crucial role in building a credible national pathway by growing futsal competitions, creating match opportunities, and investing in technical development for Match Officials.

Talent identification

When asked how future talent gets recognized, current FIFA Instructor, and Director of Officials Joe Audi says that it, "employs a systematic and personal approach to talent identification, focusing on game management, application of the Laws, and the ability to respond to different match scenarios."

The involvement of FIFA instructors at the Futsal Canadian Championships speaks volumes about Canada Soccer’s commitment to high-quality referee development.

Through Alexis's experience at the 2025 Futsal Canadian Championship, we gain a firsthand perspective on the commitment and expertise needed to excel on the national stage. We asked her for three tips for Futsal Officials to do, to better position themselves for success.

Alexis' Tips:

1. Knowledge of Laws of the game and fitness are the dual foundations of all great referees. Without both of these, it would be impossible to move forward.

2. It's essential to get reps in. To improve, one has to regularly referee high quality futsal games and approach them with professionalism and respect. Competitive local leagues are essential to the futsal ecosystem in Canada.

3. Seek out feedback from knowledgeable sources, including assessors, instructors, and peers. Actively engage in discussion and ask meaningful questions.
