On this International Volunteer Day 2024, we are proud to celebrate Mario Giancola, a true pillar of the Ontario Soccer community.

Play. Inspire. Unite.

Mario is this year’s recipient of the Mazda Legends Award, presented by PrimaMazda and Zanchin Automotive Group.

His contributions to soccer in Ontario span decades, and his dedication knows no bounds. As a match official, event volunteer, and passionate supporter of youth and inclusive soccer, Mario’s impact can be seen across countless events held at the Zanchin Automotive Soccer Centre, including the MilkUP Ontario Cup, Ontario Indoor Cup and Gary Miller Charity Shield.

Mario’s heart for the game is perhaps best exemplified by his years of officiating and supporting the Special Olympics division at the Ontario Cup. Beyond refereeing, Mario has stepped into virtually every volunteer role imaginable—field convenor, PA announcer, scorekeeper, and even security—always bringing warmth, humour and leadership to every task.

Soccer has also been a meaningful outlet for Mario. As a Social Worker with Child and Family Services, he often turned to the soccer fields as a way to recharge and find balance. It was here that he found joy in contributing to the community, both on and off the field.

Born in Limosano, Italy, Mario’s love for soccer began with his father and blossomed into a life-long passion. Whether coaching youth teams, mentoring young referees, or officiating intense rival matches in Toronto, he has consistently elevated the game while fostering a sense of community.

Mario’s story reminds us of the power of volunteerism in creating lasting memories, opportunities and connections. We are incredibly grateful for Mario’s leadership and service, and we thank him for making soccer in Ontario a welcoming and inclusive space for all.
