Ontario Soccer is proud to recognize the 32 dedicated Match Officials who were appointed to the 2024 Ontario Summer Games, hosted in London from August 1 to 4. These officials represented 13 different Districts across the province and played a crucial role in ensuring the success of this prestigious event.
Over the course of four days, 28 highly competitive games took place, culminating in the gold and bronze medal matches on Sunday, August 4. The Match Officials were pivotal in maintaining the integrity of the competition, showcasing their skill and professionalism throughout the tournament.
This year’s Ontario Summer Games also marked a significant milestone for our Match Official community. The appointed officials had the privilege of being the first to wear Ontario Soccer’s new Match Official kits, proudly sponsored by O’Neills. These kits symbolize not only our commitment to soccer excellence but also the importance of our Match Officials in the Beautiful Game.
Marlene Ford, the Director of Officials for the London 2024 Ontario Summer Games, provided essential leadership throughout the weekend. With extensive experience in various roles—from Match Official to mentor and now as Director of Officials—Marlene’s guidance was invaluable and ensured the smooth operation of the tournament. Reflecting on her experience, Ford noted, "This was my second time being the Director of Officials at the Ontario Summer Games, and probably my sixth time being involved, as a referee, mentor, assessor and now Director of Officials."
This time around, Marlene’s role encompassed overseeing assignments, assisting mentors, facilitating educational sessions, and troubleshooting any competition-related issues. The strategic approach to assignments, especially in the first two days, allowed for a blend of experience and fresh perspectives among the officials. "The thought process for Day 1 and Day 2 was to keep the experienced officials as Ref/4th and use Grade 7's as AR1 and Grade 6's as AR2," she explained. "Assignment decisions for Day 3 and 4 were done by committee, based on what we had seen and mentor feedback."
The group of Match Officials appointed to the London 2024 Ontario Summer Games showcased a dynamic range of talent, ranging from Grade 6 to Grade 8, aged 18 to 30, some with experience in League1 Ontario and OPDL, and others with only local league experience, Marlene shared. This diversity allowed for a unique opportunity to observe and develop officials from different backgrounds and levels of experience.
Opportunities like the Ontario Summer Games are crucial for the development of Match Officials. For seasoned referees, it’s a chance to demonstrate leadership and reflect on their progress, while newer officials gain insight into the demands of high-level competition. "For the new referees entering this type of Ontario Soccer tournament, this was an opportunity to see how games at this level are run, and an opportunity to work with young higher-level referees and see what it takes to get to the next level," Marlene said. She added that the presence of mentors at every game provided invaluable support, offering guidance during water breaks, halftime and beyond.
Ontario Soccer would like to extend a special thank you to the mentors who dedicated their time to support and develop our Match Officials throughout the weekend: John Oliva, John-Morgan Pizzuti, Angelina Baldino, Tristan Forgie, Joey Filipic, Teodora Glisic, and Wayne Sharp. Your contributions help shape the future of officiating in Ontario.
Congratulations once again to all the Match Officials who participated in the London 2024 Ontario Summer Games. Your dedication, professionalism, and passion for the game are deeply appreciated and celebrated. We look forward to seeing your continued growth and success in the future.
