In an intense matchup for the U15 Girls OPDL Cup, Ottawa South United, went home victorious with a 2-1 win over Woodbridge SC in a nail-biting penalty shootout. The match, held on Sunday morning at Vaughan’s Zanchin Automotive Soccer Centre, was a thrilling showcase of talent and dedication from both teams, giving fans a great end to the outdoor season.
The game kicked off with Woodbridge playing very aggressively, holding much of the possession, while Ottawa South United applied lots of defensive pressure. The breakthrough came in the eight minute when Ottawa’s Aria Winter passed through the defense to an open Abigail White who scored from the top of the box with a wonderful strike.
Woodbridge tied things up in the 34th minute when they capitalized on a key turnover that lead to a fast break goal - putting a great end to the first half with Ottawa South United having six shots total, with four on target. Meanwhile Woodbridge Strikers shot a total of five shots with one being on target.
In the action packed second half, both teams displayed tremendous efforts playing strong offensively and even stronger defensively which is a testament to their efforts throughout the season.
Things were once again neck-and-neck in the shootout with both teams going a perfect three-for-three to start, but OSU goalkeeper Taylor Raistrick made a huge save on the last Woodbridge kicker to bringing home the OPDL Cup.
