It was a picture-perfect night at the Ontario Soccer Centre on Sunday with a colourful sunset setting the scene for the Men’s 2023 MilkUP Ontario Cup Final. West Ottawa Warriors MP was victorious in the match, beating Scarborough G.S United 6-5 after a penalty shootout that went to sudden death.
West Ottawa had a stronger start on the scoreboard getting the only goal of the first half. It was Ricky Comba that opened the scoring in the 27th minute after his teammate Javane Henry drove down the right flank past a few defenders and delivered a perfect cross.
In the 51st minute, a West Ottawa defender was called for a handball, leaving G.S United with a penalty kick. Though goalkeeper Anton Favre accurately guessed which direction the ball was going, the shooter, Yunus Mollayev, shot the ball with enough power and direction to get it past the keeper.
Tying up the score seemed to give G.S United some momentum, as the team came back around for another goal less than one minute after Mollayev’s. This time, Elijah Lorenc-Clarke passed the ball toward Jarrett Hamilton who was running straight down the middle toward West Ottawa’s keeper. Hamilton managed to kick the ball past him and into the net, giving his team the lead.
West Ottawa tied it back up in the 77th minute when Ayden Harris took advantage of a corner kick, scoring a second goal for his squad.
The match ended in a 2-2 draw, sending the teams to a shootout in which both teams scored four times. In sudden death, West Ottawa goalkeeper Mitch Leclair made a big save in the second round, ending the match and securing the Men’s title for his team.
