King City Royals defeat Caledon United FC 1-0 to win the 2023 Women’s MilkUP Ontario Cup

Play. Inspire. Unite.

The King City Royals worked their way to a win over Caledon United FC during Saturday’s fourth and final match at the Ontario Soccer Centre, making them the 2023 Women’s MilkUP Ontario Cup Champions.

An exciting opening goal came from King City less than 2 minutes after the opening whistle. Kendra Saxton tore down the right flank, making a pass to Stephanie Pongrac who swiftly hit the ball into the net.

That would be the one and only goal of the match.

It was a nail-biter at halftime with the teams creating an equal number of shots on target. Caledon fought to tie the score in the second half, making five shots on target compared to King City’s two, but they couldn’t manage to hit the back of the net.

King City goalkeeper Haley Smith gave an infallible performance, allowing her team’s singular goal to carry them through the match. Her most impressive saves happened in the 76th minute when she dove to deflect a shot headed from the top corner from Caledon’s Haley Walsh. When Jennifer Smith made a second attempt on the rebound, Haley Smith made another impressive block.
