Cambridge United Defeat Unionville Milliken 5-4 in Penalties to Win the 2023 Boys U17 OPDL Cup

Play. Inspire. Unite.

In the final game of the 2023 OPDL Cup Finals, Cambridge SC met with Unionville Milliken SC in the U17 Boys division at the Ontario Soccer Centre on Sunday evening.

It was a high-octane first half, with both teams creating many great scoring chances and opportunities. In total, the two teams had 13 shots with six being on target – three from Unionville and three from Cambridge.

Unionville’s best chance of the half came in the 12th minute when Yuaan Cheliyan crossed to a wide open Andrew Popov just outside the six-yard box, but his first-time shot went just wide. Cambridge’s best chance came in the 33rd minute when a centering cross found Nolan Covach at the top of the box, but his shot went just over the bar.

The score would remain nil-nil after the first half despite all the great chances.

It was more of the same in the second half with both teams creating many scoring opportunities. This time around however, both teams were able to net a goal.

Cambridge’s goal came in the 54th minute when Shanvir Sandhu fired a weak shot that just snuck through the keepers gloves. Unionville replied almost immediately in the 59th minute when Popov made a great run down the centre, and finished a break away, thanks to a great through ball from Adchaiyan Asok.

The game would remain tied 1-1, requiring penalties to separate the sides. Both teams took great shots and the difference came in round three when Cambridge Goalkeeper Markus Ptak made the only save of the shootout propelling them to the 5-4 shootout win.
