Last week, Canada Soccer released the names of those who will suit up for the Great White North at the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia & New Zealand 2023™. It comes with no surprise that the province will be well-represented at the tournament, with 15 of Canada’s 23 players being Made in Ontario talents.

“I’m proud to name this dynamic and exciting 23 player roster,” Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team (CANWNT) Head Coach Bev Priestman said. “I know every single person has given their all to make this squad. It’s a great mix of veterans, experienced and new players who can all bring something different this summer.”

The average age of the group is 27-years-old, with many familiar faces returning and six making their first appearance in the tournament.

In the weeks leading up to the World Cup, Priestman had a squad of 25 players attend the pre-tournament camp in Australia. The group spent their time adjusting to the new time zone, acclimating to the climate, bonding with their teammates, and fine-tuning their game plan ahead of the World Cup.

Coming off their gold medal win at Tokyo 2020, another international triumph is in the cards for Canada this summer.

The tournament kicks off on July 20 for those watching from Ontario. Canada will face off against Nigeria at 10:30 p.m. ET that night, with games on July 26 and July 31 to follow.

Canada Soccer released their final 23 player roster for the 2023 Women’s World Cup on Sunday, July 9. The roster is listed below. Ontario Soccer was fortunate to attend a roster release viewing party hosted by Brams United Soccer Club at Garden Square in downtown Brampton. Below are some highlights from the festivities, including some great commentary from the family of squad members Ashley Lawrence, Nichelle Prince, and former Made in Ontario Bronze medalist with Canada’s 2012 Olympic Women’s Soccer team, Jonelle Filigino.

As part of Ontario Soccer’s coverage of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, we will be profiling the 15 Ontario players on the squad, providing some insight into each of the players’ background at the grassroots level, highlighting the Clubs, Coaches, friends, family and teammates that helped produce them. We hope their stories help shed some light on Ontario Soccer’s Player Development Pathway, and provides some inspiration to all those young soccer players, showing them that it is in fact possible to become a world-class soccer player, here in Ontario.

In addition, we also spoke to a few of the Ontario players in Australia as part of a special Women’s World Cup inspired Made in Ontario podcast series, which will be released throughout the tournament. The first episode will be released Thursday, when the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off.

As the Official Canadian and US Bank of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, BMO would like to invite you to join us as we cheer on the Canada for their match against Ireland.
