Over the weekend, Ontario’s U15 and U17 Provincial Xcel Teams competed in the Quebec-Ontario Inter-Provincial Series at the Soccer Québec Soccer Centre in Laval, to wrap up this year’s Provincial Xcel schedule.

It was quite an even battle between the four Ontario and four Quebec teams, but overall, team Ontario came out ahead, amassing six wins, four loses and two draws, compared to Quebec’s four wins, six loses and two draws, over four, three-game series.

The 2023 Provincial Xcel competition schedule features the Xcel teams taking on various other teams from other environments, in showcase series. The schedule began last month with the Boys U14 and U16 teams who took on Toronto FC Academy on April 22 and 23 at BMO Training Ground. The Girls U14 team played each other in an all-star-style inter-squad game, while the Girls U16 team played against the Girls National Development Centre NextGen team at the Ontario Soccer Centre on April 29 and 30.

The schedule then shifted to the aforementioned Quebec-Ontario Inter-Provincial Series for the U15 and U17 divisions.

The Provincial program provides an opportunity for Ontario Soccer registered players, who are competing at the U14, U15, U16 and U17 age groups, to be scouted by advanced soccer programs. The program focuses on player screening, talent identification and benchmarking.

The Talented Pathway, specifically the Ontario Player Development League (OPDL), is the primary avenue in which potential Provincial Team Players are detected. There is however an alternative player detection option for those Ontario Soccer registered players who do not compete within the Talented Pathway (OPDL & League1 Ontario) which is called Talent on Location Days (ToLD).
