The 2023 Ontario Futsal Cup concluded on Sunday with the Men’s Finals which kicked of at 6:30 p.m. EST at Durham College in Oshawa. Facing off for the Championship was a pair of teams out of Group B, after sweeping the semi-finals over their Group A counterparts, in 9 de Octubre Toronto and Nueva Escuela FC - North York.

Both sides were 3-1 going into the Final matchup with the slight statistical favour going the side of Nueva who posted 28 goals for and 17 goals against, while Octubre scored 22 goals and allowed 19. However, the mental advantage was on the side of Octubre who defeated Nueva 6-4 on March 11 to open the tournament for both sides.

The Finals were no different, and it would take penalties to eventually separate the even matched sides, however, the opening ten minutes belonged to Octubre. They controlled most of the possession and scoring chances, barely letting Nueva get a foothold or advance into their half. Their strong start eventually paid off in the 16th minute when Raheem Rose skipped past a defender and fired a shot past Nueva keeper David Campusano for the games opening goal.

Nueva would eventually grow into the game and start forcing Octubre into some tough situations defensively. In the 19th minute, standout performer Osman Hussein danced past a couple defenders and was awarded a penalty kick after being brought down. Joshua Muena would convert the penalty to bring the score to 1-1.

Moments later with seconds left in the half, Neuva would win a second penalty which, Muena, once again converted to give them the 2-1 lead at halftime.

It was more back and forth action in the second half. Once again, Octubre came out the stronger side. It took them only four minutes to equalize and another minute to retake the lead thanks to goals from Matthew Rios and Christian Samaniego.

A few minutes later in the ninth minute, Nueva equalized with a goal from Tariq Nelson. The game would remain tied at 3-3 requiring penalties.

In the shootout, Octubre’s keeper, Joshua Lemos, stole the show saving the first two kicks to propel them to the 4-2 shootout victory.

With the win, 9 de Octubre Toronto earn the right to represent Team Ontario at the Futsal Canadian Championship’s at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex in Calgary, Alberta in April 2023.
