Ontario Soccer has elected a new member to its Board of Directors at the 2022 Annual Meeting of the Members (AMM) on Saturday. This event, which was once again held in-person, marked the organization’s 121th annual meeting of the members since Ontario Soccer was established in 1901.

Solomon Amoako was elected as Independent Director, while Alice Strachan and Matt Williams were re-elected to their positions as Regional Directors. The Designated Director position remains vacant.

Amoako, the new face being brought into the Ontario Soccer boardroom, brings a depth of knowledge, leadership and soccer experience that will help strategically guide the organization, as soccer returns to normal following the global pandemic.

Amoako has years of experience in strategic planning, sales, business development and corporate governance, and is currently a managing partner at Ribbon Global Inc, a sales and account management firm. As an athlete, Amoako was a successful soccer player, whose accomplishments include Ontario Champion, Canadian National Champion and playing for the U17 Canadian National Team.

The Ontario Soccer Board of Directors also welcomed back two members: Alice Strachan, Regional Director – South, who returns for a third term after being elected in 2018; and Matt Williams, Regional Director – East, who returns for a second term after being elected in 2019.

“We are delighted to welcome Mr. Amoako to the Ontario Soccer family,” said Peter Augruso, President and Chair, Board of Directors. “The depth and breadth of his experience in sport and soccer will be invaluable to Ontario Soccer as we continue to push towards a return to normal and beyond, as we strive to be a leading sporting body in Canada.”

Departing members are Michael Szubelak – Independant Director, and Sergio Folino – Designated Director. Ontario Soccer thanks them for their leadership and service during their tenure.

“Ontario Soccer is eternally grateful to Mr. Szubelak and Mr. Folino for their service,” said Augruso. “Both men were instrumental to Ontario Soccer as the organization experienced its most difficult times with the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. We wish you all the best!”

In the Ontario Soccer governance structure, the business of Ontario Soccer is conducted by a Board of Directors, composed of 12 elected individuals and one senior executive.

The 21 District Soccer Associations who are the “Voting Members” are represented by a Voting Members Council. The Council is composed of the President, or designate representing each District Association in Ontario and it submits recommendations to the Ontario Soccer Board of Directors and the Chief Executive Officer on a number of game related matters.
