Ontario Soccer are providing an update on the Canada Soccer Grassroots Coach Education Program in Ontario.

In addition to Information Bulletin I2021-058 and I2021-041, Ontario Soccer is confirming that the waiver for coaches to be registered and actively coaching with only “Theory-Trained” status will no longer be in effect for the 2022 Outdoor Season.

As per Ontario Soccer’s Grassroots Standards and the Operational Procedures, coaches must have a minimum of the following to be assigned as a coach to a team:

As a further reminder, the Canada Soccer Grassroots Coach Education (GCE) courses are divided into two distinctive parts – theory and practical – and that all coaches must first complete the theory component of the courses online through Canada Soccer Grassroots Coach Education Academy Platform before registering or attending a practical session.

To support the removal of the waiver, Ontario Soccer has updated the Hosting Guidelines for members (Districts and Clubs) to deliver GCE practical sessions, in the lead up to the Outdoor Season. Prior to applying to host a practical through Ontario Soccer, all prospective hosts are asked to carefully review the updated 2022 Grassroots Coach Education Hosting Guide, which can be found on OntarioSoccer.net.

To better align with the standards of the National Coach Certification Program, course capacity has been reduced to 24 coaches, from 30, while Learning Facilitators per course have increased to two from one. The coach minimum to host a workshop has also increased to 16 coaches from 15.

To alleviate some of the administrative load, courses will now be billed to hosts at a single flat rate that, in attempt to continue to reduce barriers to access, sees a reduction in the price per coach for all GCE courses.

All the changes captured in the 2022 GCE Hosting Guide will take effect on February 1, 2022.

If you have any further questions or wish to host a practical, please contact Alex Di Noia, Sr. Coordinator, Match Officials Development & Community Education.
