Woodbridge Strikers defeated London Alliance FC Mustangs 2-1 to win the provincial championship

Play. Inspire. Unite.

The Ontario Cup has staged a triumphant comeback in 2021, as the 105th running of the soccer for life competition has played out across the province.

What began as nearly 300 teams has been whittled down to the last 12, with each vying for Ontario Cup glory over two days this weekend.

The Woodbridge Strikers took on the London Alliance FC Mustangs in the U-14 Girls Ontario Cup final on Sunday.

London got on the board early when their dogged work in the offensive end led to a chance for Tienna Martins. Martins corralled the ball on the edge of the box and looped her shot over the keeper to give her side a 1-0 lead in the 3rd minute.

Woodbridge didn’t take long to respond and they equalized in the 9th minute. Shawna Slawter was sent in on net.

They weren’t done there though. Three minutes later Daniela Santoriello burst by her defender and played a low shot into the corner to give Woodbridge a 2-1 lead in just the 12th minute.

After the fever pitch start to the game, things slowed considerably as both teams settled into defensive positions. Woodbridge keeper Palmer Grys made a number of key saves to sustain her team’s narrow lead.

London was issued a penalty kick in the dying moments. Grys once again stood tall and watched as the ensuing penalty sailed over the top of the net.

That would be all they would need and Woodbridge would win the U-14 Girls Ontario Cup title.
