As 2017 winds down, we're looking back at some of the best moments we've captured from Ontario Soccer events this year.

From Ontario Cup to League1 Ontario to OPDL and beyond, the underlying thread to these stories is the passion for the game that we all share.

An annual event, the Ontario Indoor Cup is the first competition of the year for most clubs and offers the opportunity to get your year off on the right foot.

This year's Finals take place at the Ontario Soccer Centre on Jan. 27-28 and Feb. 10-11.

A packed house at Vaughan Sportsplex and an intense atmosphere had blood boiling in the Men’s Ontario Futsal Cup Final between Futsal Club Toronto and Toronto United. 

A passionate affair saw FCT edge Toronto United Futsal 4-3 in the final.

A new look, a new name and a new direction was announced by Ontario’s provincial soccer body today.

Ontario Soccer is the new name and brand for the organization, replacing Ontario Soccer Association, and it’s meant to signal a fresh start for the game of soccer in Ontario.

As well, a new simple and modern logo was unveiled to the over 380,000 players, 70,000 coaches, 10,000 match officials and 25,000 administrators.

The Ontario Soccer Summit 2017 was a sell-out success with over 600 coaches, match officials and soccer leaders attending the premier development event in Ontario.

It was the first event hosted by Ontario Soccer following the re-brand announcement March 1 and it served as an opportunity to showcase the new name, look and mantra for the provincial organization.

Attendees were treated to keynote speeches from Jason deVos, Director of Development for Canada Soccer, Sheldon Kennedy, Co-Founder of Respect Group and Lorraine Lafrenière, the Chief Executive Officer of the Coaching Association of Canada.

As well, they heard from presenters from all over the world who hailed from organizations such as: FIFA, the Belgian FA, Canada Soccer, U.S. Soccer, South Hampton FC, Toronto FC and many more.

The 2017 Club Excellence Award recipients were honoured at the Ontario Soccer Summit 2017. 

The Club Excellence Award program was established in 2007 and has grown into an acclaimed, province-wide recognition program for effectively-run community-based soccer Clubs, which offer safe, healthy and enjoyable environments for all involved. 

The Award is based on a framework of criteria at three different levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold.

Ontario Soccer honoured its volunteers at the Centre Circle Awards in 2017.

A classy, gala event, presented by Nothers Signs and Recognition, this year Ontario Soccer unveiled a refreshed awards program that expanded the current awards structure and reflected a more inclusive and accurate representation of those who exemplify the best in Ontario and who have made outstanding contributions to the game.

Vic Rauter, a TSN Broadcaster and one-time voice of Soccer Saturday, was the host for the evening and led attendees through a walk down memory lane of the evening award winners.

Team Ontario had a strong showing this year as they took on provincial programs from Quebec and British Columbia.

The Ontario boys and girls U-14, U-15 and U-16 teams tested their skills Apr. 28 – Apr. 30 in Saint-Hubert Quebec in three days of competition.

National team and professional club scouts were in attendance.

Ontario finished the weekend with a combined record of five wins, 12 draws and four losses.

It was an year for Ontario Soccer as familiar faces were re-elected and new ones joined the fold. 

The Ontario Soccer Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place at the Holiday Inn Toronto – International Airport and the membership has elected a President, new executives and confirmed 21 district representatives.

Ron Smale, president for four terms, has been re-elected for a fifth term as Ontario Soccer President, defeating Dino Rossi, Commissioner of League1 Ontario.

Ontario Soccer proudly announced the 2017 class of Match Official Appreciation Day award winners before a large crowd at BMO Field. 

The awards are divided into three categories: the Spirit of the Game Awards, the OPDL Development Award and the Club Development Award.

Ontario Soccer announced the launch of the Long Term Officials Development (LTOD) program in 2017. 

A five-year strategic initiative of Ontario Soccer, the LTOD is now an integral component of the Operational Plan of the Soccer Operations Department.

Monti Mohsen struck gold with his free kick moments before full-time as Ontario captured the 2017 Canada Games Men's Soccer Tournament in Winnipeg.

Ontario won the championship final 1-0 over Alberta, with the Ottawa midfielder scoring the lone goal in the last minute of play.

The Women's Team Ontario settled for silver after being edged 1-0 by Quebec. 

The Ontario Soccer Stadium was host to clubs from across Ontario as the soccer for life provincial championships wrapped up, including six divisions whose winner qualified for the Toyota National Club Championships. 

The Ontario Cup is the largest competition of its kind in Canada. One of the oldest sporting events in the country, the Ontario Cup was first staged in 1901 and each year 12,000 athletes from all across the province compete for their division titles.

It was a banner year for League1 Ontario. 

The League1 Ontario Women’s program announced a unique partnership with the Peel Regional Police and saw FC London do the double, winning the league cup and league title in 2017. 

The Oakville Blue Devils became the first team to advance to the Canadian Championships and will compete for the Voyageurs Cup in 2018. 

Ontario Soccer also recently announced League1 Ontario will see significant expansion in 2018.

The Ontario Player Development League (OPDL) introduced a cup competition in 2017 and crowned six OPDL Charity Shield champions. 

As well, Ontario Soccer announced that nine new license holders will commence training and competition in 2018. 

Launched in 2014 with the 2001 age group, the OPDL is the province's standards-based, youth high performance league that combines top level competition with strict high performance training standards. This innovative exciting youth high performance program is an important component of the overall movement to adopt the core principles of Long Term Player Development (LTPD) across soccer at large in Ontario and Canada. In 2018, OPDL will also encompass the U13 to U17 age categories, for both males and females.

OPDL represents young players' early graduation to a genuine high performance training environment, targeting only the top athletes in the province from age groups U13 to eventually U17, with what will be the highest level of competitive youth soccer in Ontario. Unlike other leagues, OPDL operates more as a high performance training program than merely a league.

The only thing more familiar than seeing the Player Development team at sessions and courses across the province in 2017, was finding their weekly practice sessions online every week.
