Canada Soccer has invited 27 players to the final U-17 women’s camp of 2017, as it continues to prepare for next April’s CONCACAF U-17 Women’s Championship in Nicaragua, which serves as the qualification tournament for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Uruguay 2018.

The camp will continue to focus on the development of this age group through Canada Soccer’s National EXCEL Curriculum and provide National EXCEL Director Bev Priestman a final opportunity to assess the players before heading into the qualification tournament for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Twelve Ontario players have been invited to the camp.

“We have brought in a few new faces from our ongoing identification from across the country and so to wrap up 2017, we hope to be really clear on the makeup of the group, allowing us to come into 2018 working on key partnerships and how we get the best out of individuals within the team,” said Priestman. “With some players recently in with the Women’s National Team for the USA Series, we will also be drawing upon those experiences, with key players sharing their learnings amongst the group. I hope that the faith in young players the system has shown will keep pushing players to new levels in their daily training environments.”

“We know next year will be a big one for all youth players in the system, so we’ve been putting in the work to prepare our EXCEL players throughout 2017, which has included tournaments and multiple development camps, some of which have included John Herdman (Canada Soccer’s Women’s Program Director and National Team Head Coach), which signifies the alignment and the investment in the overall system with 2019, 2020 and beyond in mind.” said Priestman. “This camp will continue to work on players’ tactical development, as well as the on and off-field connections required to succeed at major international tournaments.”

Canada Soccer’s Women’s EXCEL program has held 102 camp days for players aged 14-20 in 2017, with the U17 team coming together for 53 of those days over seven camps.

Canada Soccer Women’s National EXCEL Program brings together the best with the best at the national youth level, throughout each year. Operating across the U-14 to U-20 age groups, the program is designed to deliver an aligned talent structure and system that progresses more top players to Canada’s Women’s National Team. Major competitions which are viewed as staging posts to assess development, allows for the development of the Women’s EXCEL Team Playing Model and tournament processes and expertise, ultimately preparing players for when they do progress up the system.

Additionally, the most talented U14 to U18 players are offered a specialised daily training environment through the Regional EXCEL Program, which is delivers Canada Soccer’s national curriculum year-round through a two-tiered talent system, with three Super Centres streamlining Canada’s National EXCEL Players into training environments in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec from smaller provincial licenced Centres.

Canada Soccer’s EXCEL System, designed by Women's EXCEL Program Director and Women’s National Team Head Coach John Herdman, has already produced eight Women’s National Team players, and Olympic bronze medalists in Kadeisha Buchanan, Ashley Lawrence, Jessie Fleming, Rebecca Quinn, Janine Beckie, Shelina Zadorsky, Deanne Rose, and Gabrielle Carle, three of whom are still eligible for youth competition.
