Canada Day weekend results create bottleneck at top of men's and women's divisions

A series of results over the Canada Day weekend established new contenders and threats to leadership at the top of the respective League1 Ontario tables.

In the Men's division, Sigma FC remain the only undefeated team in League1 after narrowly beating east division rivals Vaughan Azzurri and finally taking over first place in the men's west division.

Sigma were helped into first place by east division contenders Durham United FA, who toppled leaders Oakville Blue Devils after a tough and physical match-up at Sheridan College.

Unionville Milliken SC retained their hold on first place in the women's division after a late comeback goal downed West Ottawa SC on Saturday night.

However, the Ottawans played out their second match of a Canada Day double-header on Sunday and defeated Toronto Blizzard 2-1 to leapfrog Vaughan Azzurri - who were held to a draw by a determined North Mississauga Panthers - and create a tight three-way bottleneck at the top of the women's division.

Women's Division Results - Presented by Peel Regional Police 

Canada U20 striker Alex Lamontagne and League1 Ontario 2016 Women's Defender of the Year Tamara Brown each scored to propel Durham United FA to a 3-1 home win over Aurora FC. Click here to read the match report, watch video and find photos. 

Unionville Milliken SC stayed top of the table after a late second half comeback led by goalscorers Natasha Klasios and Stella Li handed the home side a 2-1 result over West Ottawa SC. Click here to read the match report, watch video and find photos. 

Colleen Beesley scored a rocket for Vaughan Azzurri to engineer a late comeback to draw determined visitors North Mississauga Panthers 1-1. Click here to read the match report, watch video and find photos. 

A second half penalty by West Ottawa SC's Melissa Baynes was enough to get the visitors a 2-1 result at the home of Toronto Azzurri Blizzard. Click here to read the match report, watch video and find photos.

FC London's Jade Kovacevic scored her ninth goal of the season to help guide the Southern Ontario club to a comprehensive 3-0 win over Sanjaxx Lions. Click here to read the match report, watch video and find photos. 

Men's Division Results

Masters FA Saints showed their blistering counter-attacking pace and clinical finishing in a 3-1 away win over Windsor TFC Stars. Click here to read the match report, watch video and find photos.

Former FC Edmonton striker and League1 Ontario 2016 Men's Golden Boot winner Elvir Gigolaj scored four goals en route to an 8-0 rout of Toronto Skillz by FC London. Click here to read the match report, watch video and find photos.

In a battle of the "Norths," North Toronto Nitros and North Mississauga Panthers couldn't best each other after an entertaining 3-3 draw at University of Toronto's Varsity Stadium. Click here  to read the match report, watch video and find photos.
