The Ontario Cup has entered its 100th year of competition. To mark the occassion, the Ontario Soccer Association is running stories throughout the summer of interesting clubs, teams and events that have happened throughout the Ontario Cup's colourful history.

The first story comes from the early days of the Ontario Cup and holds a special place in Canadian soccer history as well.

Galt FC, which was formed in 1881 and is now part of Cambridge, played in the Western Ontario Soccer Association and had joined the Ontario Football Association League in 1901. The Ontario Football Association League was the initial awarding body of the Ontario Cup.

The Ontario Cup originally had a spring and fall competition. Galt FC would win them both in 1901 and 1902, as well as the spring competition in 1903. Meaning the first five Ontario Cups were all won by the same team.

Galt FC would go on to win the spring Ontario Cup tournament in 1910 as well but it is what the team did in 1904 that really makes them a standout.

That year the Olympic Games were held as part of the World's Fair in St. Louis. Galt FC would be entered as Canada's only representative. Other teams from Canada had dropped out because of the cost of travel or, in the case of U of T, because they kept getting beat by Galt.

Galt would play off against two American teams, winning the first game 7-0 against Christian Brothers College and the second game 4-0 against St. Rose Parish.

That would be enough for Galt to be awarded the Olympic Gold medal in soccer. It is the only Olympic Gold medal Canada has ever won in soccer.
