The 2014 outdoor season will be one like no other for Ontario’s female soccer referees, mentors, assessors and instructors thanks to the WISER (Women in Soccer Empowering Referees) committee.

The committee has spent the winter designing a myriad of initiatives and opportunities for female game officials at all levels of the game, centering on education and mentorship. Mark your calendars, the season is almost upon us, and WISER will be seeing you both on and off the field.

1. Contest, Contest, Contest!

WISER is having a poster and a ‘tag line’ contest! We are looking for a poster that will promote WISER, the empowerment of female game officials, and our upcoming events. The chosen poster designer will win a complete UMBRO kit and their poster will be used at the OSA Annual General Meeting (AGM) and for WISER appearances for the outdoor season. Poster size is 18 x 24 and no submission will be refused. Submissions are due by April 10, 2014. For access to the dropbox folder with all photos and logos, please email Nicky Pearson at npearson@soccer.on.ca

2. WISER Think Tank

On Saturday, April 26, at the Holiday Inn – MacDonald Room, 790 Dixon Road, Toronto, from 9am-12pm, WISER will be hosting a women soccer referee think tank at the OSA’s Soccer Conference/AGM. Register with npearson@soccer.on.ca to join fellow female soccer referees in discussions focusing on mentorship, support, referee coaching, development, and much more.  Guest speaker will be announced shortly.

3. Mentorship Opportunities

Ontario Player Development League marks the inaugural season of the OPDL, and WISER will be providing referee mentors from both the WISER committee and the broader female soccer referee community for our OPDL referees. Mentors will provide support and guidance for officials according to the ODPL’s Technical Manual for Referees.

WISER will also be present at the following tournaments this summer providing more mentoring and networking opportunities and workshops for female soccer referees. Feel free to contact the WISER committee regarding additional opportunities and stay tuned for additional dates and mentorship opportunities.

  • May 2-4: Regional Competition, Oshawa
  • May 2-4: First on Turf Girls Tournament in Guelph
  • June 5-8:  OFSAA AAA Championships - Oakville
  • July 4-6: Cataraqui Clippers Ambassador Cup Tournament in Kingston
  • July 12: OWSL League Cup Finals in Georgetown
