In 2016, the Game Leader certification became mandatory for the U6 to U8 games in the summer season.

The objective of the Game Leader program is to allow for an effective, child-friendly approach to supervising small-sided-games for children and also creating more opportunities to get involved in grassroots soccer.

The program was designed by the Ontario Soccer's Player Development, Match Officials and Coaching departments and it is supported and endorsed by the Canadian Soccer Association as part of the Long Term Player Development plan.

Peel Halton Soccer Association is one of the Ontario districts which has embraced the Game Leader program and last weekend they hosted a number of Grassroots festivals across their region.

One location was the Oakville Soccer Club, which hosted the U8 festival and used 10 minifields with 50+ teams taking part in the event.

Ontario Soccer President Ron Smale and Peel Halton Soccer Association President William Hay were on hand to meet with parents, players and recognize the Game Leaders for their dedication to the development of grassroots players.

If you're interested in becoming a Game Leader, the process is very simple. The 35-minute course and quiz are available through Coach Centre.
