Since learning of their opportunity to host an Ontario Cup Semi-Final weekend for the first time ever, the SASA volunteers were busy planning an extravaganza and preparing for every contingency.
“There’s only one thing we would like to have changed in our plans for this weekend,” said District Ontario Cup Coordinator, Joe Ceglie. “And that’s the weather”.
Eight teams from Southern Ontario made the trip by bus from as far away as London, Nepean and Leamington.
While the teams focused on warm-ups, pep talks and the ultimate goal of winning a berth in the coveted Ontario Cup Finals, the Sault Volunteers ensured that every aspect of the competition was going according to plan.
A new electronic scoreboard was installed, up-and-coming referees officiating their first Ontario Cup were mentored and the pitch was expertly tended to during the relentless downpours.
In the end, Newmarket United, Ajax Bulldogs, Pickering Power Pythons and Oak Ridges Knights made it through and had the more enjoyable trip back home, but every team in the event gave it their all and contributed to the exciting on-field action.
A special mention must go to the enthusiastic parents who braved both distance and the elements to make the trip in support of their players.
The dedicated Sault Volunteers are well-deserving of praise for providing a sound system, additional changing rooms and a volunteer office — all donated by local community businesses.
A large team of SASA Board Members and Volunteers was on hand to carry out Ceglie’s directions, including SASA President Nelson Soares who, armed with a shovel, screwdriver and wrench dutifully played his part in making the weekend a great success.
