OSA Launches Advanced Referee Training Program

3/5/2010

VAUGHAN, ON — After over a year of planning, the OSA Advanced Referee Training Program was launched on February 27th where 21 Provincial Referees with aspirations of becoming National Referees were tutored by selected Instructors and Assessors. It was the first of 4 in-person education sessions that will take place this year. These sessions will include on-field practical sessions, in-class sessions, fitness testing and group attendance at CSL games.

The main purpose of this program is to enhance and increase the quality of refereeing at the provincial level. The secondary purpose is to use this program as the training ground for those seeking national nomination.

Referee Benefits

Amongst the benefits of the program to the referees are a uniform education and training of the top-level referees, uniform understanding of the expectations of our officials from our assessors and instructors, an understanding of the requirements/expectations to get nominated and a “trickle down” effect, whereby through word of mouth, the referee passes on his or her experience to lower grade referees in his or her district.

Instructor and Assessor Benefits

The referees in the program will be given priority for games in leagues such as the Canadian Soccer League, OUA and OSL games as well as Senior Ontario Cup Semi-Finals and Final matches.

At the end of the season, all referees will be ranked and the top 10 will remain in the program and the other 11 will have to re-apply along with the other Provincial referees who would like to enter the program.
